Journey Back to Albatross (Lessons in non-duality)

on

It’s hard for me to remember at times, you know, that we’re not what we think we are.

We hover over the world around us, but only in dreams.

Within the body, everything seems as it is.

Hard, solid, separate.

But once I return to that single moment of enlightenment, that single moment of almost uncontrollable laughter, the clarity comes back.

I don’t remember what year it was, but I was alone, of course, at the cabin.

It started with a simple intention.

To get clear.

Well, I remember the absolute moment in which I no longer needed any help from anyone outside of myself.

Within that moment, some would call it enlightenment.

For me, it was simply a massive moment of clarity, as I sat on the rocking chair over looking the lake.

I looked out towards the water, then raised my hands in front of me.

Laughter.

“I get it. Hilarious….I get it.”

It’s hard to explain that moment, but if I were to put it into a single sentence, heck, into two words, it would be this.

The all.

I saw the two as one, but from a third as the witness.

Even beyond that, there was yet another witness.

And that witness, was the one laughing.

The part that made it so funny, was the self within the self, within the self, that was observing.

The only way to describe that much clarity, is laughter.

It’s like remembering your sunglasses are on your head, after you’ve blamed ever inanimate object around you, for stealing them from you.

Man, it feels good.

But it doesn’t last.

That’s why this gets more interesting.

We move through life considering our survival as the highest priority.

But if you cannot die, why do you worry about surviving?

Well, experience to me, is the mos prudent answer.

It’s that pair of eyes, connected to a single brain, that puts the ocean and the body together as one.

Laughter.

It’s so obvious it’s funny.

I remember writing The Albatross for the program Connect.

An Albatross is known for having a wingspan of up to 12 feet.

When I first read about the bird, I wanted it metaphorically attribute its massive wingspan, within a single experience of non-duality.

But I knew it wasn’t enough.

I needed something larger, more expansive, but still symbolic to the Albatross.

So, I made the Albatross a ship.

Not something that goes in water, but a ship that could take you to space and beyond.

And, it was the beyond part that was so important.

You see, there is no ship.  There is no body.

Just you.

You, are the Albatross.

For me, this is fulfilling as the module gives an experiential example of what it’s like to travel beyond the body.

That last and first single step past the physical, and beyond the limitations of duality.

This, is what my experience was so many years ago was like.

So yes, next time you’re out of answers, take a good look at the ridiculousness of the questions themselves.

What you may find, is that most of the time your uncertainty is based on a feeling that only the body knows.

And all you have to do in order to move beyond it, is move beyond the body, itself…
